fme AG endorses CMIS Initiative for uniform ECM-Standard
Through its membership in OASIS (Organization for the Advancement of Structured Information Standards), the Braunschweig consulting firm gains access to an important international technology network and will thus be able to actively participate in the formulation of the future ECM Standard CMIS (Content Management Interoperability Services). According to fme there is considerable demand for a uniform ECM standard, simply because many companies currently focus on the reorganisation of their existing business processes and in this effort insist on complete and consistent access to all relevant information. With its specialised consulting offering and its CMIS capable client smartBar, fme delivers to its customers platform independent, innovative concepts for the optimised use of Enterprise Content Management. Interoperability between different ECM repositories is the goal of OASIS’s standardisation initiative. The standardisation proposal CMIS, submitted to OASIS in 2008, represents a technical framework for assuring transparent access to information located in different repository types. Originally brought into being by EMC, IBM and Microsoft, the initiative is now being sponsored by over 50 members, among them SAP, Oracle, Alfresco Software and OpenText. Enterprises often deploy specialised Document Management Systems (DMS), in order to satisfy the functional requirements of very specific and individual client applications. What’s more, after several mergers or organisational changes, business content may end up spread over many different repositories. No surprise that large corporations may operate up to 30 different Document Management Systems. "Unhindered access to information, in whatever repository this may be stored, is the base for an enterprise-wide, integrated and efficient Enterprise Content Management and thus key to obtaining real added value from information existing in the organisation,” says Dirk Bode, CEO of fme AG. "CMIS offers a true alternative allowing continued use of existing DM systems, while at the same time deploying a CMIS client to build bridges to information islands which have been isolated till now.” A "Smart Client" for CMIS In September at the DMS Expo trade fair in Cologne, fme plans to launch a universal DMS-CMIS client for Email Management based on its enhanced and extended smartBar client. fme’s smartBar is an easy to use and intuitive client for Enterprise Content Management. Every type of information object may be stored into the repository with a minimum of mouse clicks, and just as easily be found and retrieved. Powerful automated functions help to simplify frequent and time-consuming work steps. The combination of CMIS with the "Smart Client” design concept of the smartBar has now evolved into a new, state-of-the-art client technology bound to breathe fresh air into the use of ECM systems. Installed and maintained via the internet, the smartBar demonstrates fast, local functionality, backed up by powerful CMIS web services whenever central business logic and server communication are required. 11.09.2009, fme AG
